Hazel & Teresa Rice

When researching House of Refuge inmates, I look through the registry I've created and methodically delve into the records of each name. I work through the list alphabetically by surname. When I reached the letter 'R', I discovered a mysterious woman: Teresa Rice.

One factor peculiar to her case, was her age. She was 33-years-old. Most residents at the House of Refuge tended to be elderly, without family, and no means of support. The House of Refuge register also indicated that Ms. Rice was admitted with a two-month-old child, a baby girl named Hazel Rice.

Hazel and Teresa's Story (The best that I can tell it, so far..)

Life led Teresa Rice to Brockville’s Insane Asylum. I do not know the year she was admitted there. I’m assuming she showed up pregnant (to the Asylum), and gave birth in the facility, because in the register for Cornwall’s House of Refuge it states that on April 10 1914, Teresa and Hazel Rice were admitted to the facility. At this point in time, Hazel was two month old. (Given the date of admittance and the fact that Hazel was two months old when she arrived at Cornwall’s House of Refuge, it is safe to assume that she was most likely born in February of 1914.)

In the register it states that Teresa was 33 years old when she was admitted on April 10 1914. Subtracting her age from the year she arrived, Teresa was born in approximately 1881. The register also states that she was born in Williamsburg.

In the House of Refuge it states that Hazel was adopted by Mrs. John Hollister of Cornwall. (Elizabeth Hollister.) In the 1921 census, I found seven-year-old Hazel still living with her adoptive family. Further research led me to a Hazel Hollister living in Brockville in 1957, 1972 and 1974, but I have no way of knowing if this is the same person. However, I have recorded this information in case it is the same Hazel Hollister I am looking for.

Teresa has been harder to find. The only piece of information I have come across, is a 1947 voters list that states that Teresa is still living in Cornwall’s House of Refuge. If you subtract the year Teresa arrived at Cornwall’s House of Refuge (1914) with the year of the voters list (1947) this tells us that Teresa could have resided there for 33 years straight.

My Findings (Up to date)

House of Refuge Inscription:

Hazel Rice, 2 months, received on April 10 1914 from Brockville Asylum. Adopted on March 16 by Mrs. John Hollister of Cornwall.

Teresa Rice, 33 years, received on April 10 1914 from Brockville Asylum. Born in Williamsburg. Female. Servant. Church of England.

The 1921 census states that John and Elizabeth Hollister still have Hazel. She now goes by Hazel Hollister.

I found a Hazel Hollister in Brockville in 1957 listed as a stenographer in the voters list. She lived at 29 Charles Street, unmarried.

Then I found a Hazel Hollister in 1972 listed as a secretary in the voters list. She lived at 31 Charles Street, unmarried.

Then I found a Hazel Hollister in 1974 listed as retired in the voters list. She lived at 31 Charles Street, unmarried.
